A small beach-front tourist resort community 100 km (62 miles) south of Cancún, between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum in Solidaridad municipality in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Akumal Mexico has kept its relaxed, laid back mood amongst boom towns such as Playa Del Carmen and Cancun. Unlike the many pre-planned resort communities popping up on the coast, Akumal is a quaint mexican town with a rich history and a proud local mix of mexicans and ex-patriots.
One of the most notable stories of the area is of Gonzalo Guerrero, a seaman from Palos who was shipwrecked at Akumal and taken hostage and went on to marry a Mayan Princess and begin the first “mestizoss” (Euro-Americans). |
The history of Akumal Mexico - Akumal traces its roots back to the Mayan Conquistador Gonzalo Guerrero.
A memorial to Guerrero and his family is located inside the town arch.Just inside the town arch, you will notice a statue of the majestic Mayan warrior, Gonzalo Guerrero and his family.Guerrero was a Conquistador shipwrecked and captured by indians on the Mayan coast in 1511. He is believed to be the first Spaniard to set foot on Mexican soil.
The daughter of the Mayan chief became Guerrero’s wife and the mother of today’s modern Maya. |

Fortunate for Guerrero, the Mayan chief of his captors had a daughter so intrigued by this strange prisoner she chose to marry Guerrero rather than sacrifice him to the gods. Their children were the first mingling of Spanish and Mayan blood.
Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language. The town was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers by Pablo Bush Romero--a Mexican businessman, diver, writer, historian, and archaeologist. Pablo Bush's family (the Bush/Wolfe family) still owns a large portion of Akumal, including the largest resort/hotel Hotel Club Akumal Caribe.
In Akumal you find nearly two hundred entrances to subterranean caves, with depths of up to 150 meters, a center for divers from all over the world. Akumal is without a doubt one of the most tranquil places on earth, this small town is preferred by lovers of the calm and isolated life |

The fine white sandy beaches at Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Sea turtles can be found in Akumal laying eggs on the beaches at night throughout the nesting season (end of April to October) or swimming in the main bay during the day.
Hatching season runs from June to November, coinciding with hurricane season. This translates to big losses in the turtle population. |

Many environmental associations are settled in the Akumal area, including Centro Ecológico Akumal, better known as CEA).
You can practice scuba diving, you don’t have to be a diver to experience the beauty of Akumal Mexico’s waters. Scenic snorkeling is just a short walk from your room no matter where you are staying. A horse trip through the jungle and a cenote tour in the Akumal jungle, or visit the ecological center where visitors can obtain information about the preservation of the reef and the protection of sea turtles |
Abundant tropical fish, nearby sunken Spanish galleon and coral gardens make Akumal Mexico a popular destination for divers from around the world.
Its reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef that stretches over 720 kilometers along the Yucatan Peninsula into Honduras. Referred to as the “Jewel of the Caribbean,” the reef is home to a high diversity of species not only coral and fish but also colorful flora, mammals, and reptiles, many of which can be seen in Akumal Mexico’s bays.
